A short look at the best titles of 2014

We are just hours away from closing out 2014 and what a year is has been! I've had a lot of ups and downs writing on this blog this year, scribbling to cover breaking E3 stories to the slow crawl of pre-Christmas season madness. If you've stuck around and enjoyed what you've read, then I'll have even bigger and better things coming in 2015! With that said, we saw a lot of great games, some much better than others, but a small handful made my top favorites of 2014. (This is, of course, just my personal opinion and there were plenty of great titles that debuted this year, both from large companies and indie developers)

3. Destiny
Destiny, the highly anticipated new Bungie title, that angered Xbox fans and brought plenty of Sony fans joy, is a highly addictive first person action title that doesn't plan on going anywhere anytime soon. Aside from it's first expansion released weeks ago, the game that launched September 9th, was also the most expensive developed title as well as the most pre-ordered new intellectual property in gaming history. Along side this and Bungies plans to keep this title rolling out new content for the next decade, gamers have a lot to look forward to in this fast paced and action packed shooter title.

2. Super smash bros for the Wii U and 3DS
If anyone tells you there was a more anticipated title this year, they're probably lying. Super Smash Bro's debuted this fall to not just one, but two separate console, boasting an expansive roster and an assortment of various and over the top levels to keep players fighting for hours. Each version featured sightly different features like the solo mode on the handheld and the monopoly-esque board for the Wii U console version. Nintendo also added two modes, a For Fun and For Glory, allowing players to take a more casual approach to online play vs. bring thrown into straight matchmaking. Between all the Nintendo Directs, Sakurais daily pics, and even the launch of Nintendo's Amiibo figures, fans were constantly waiting week after week for these titles and the wait certainly paid off. There's even a bonus returning fighter for gamers that have both the 3DS and Wii U versio0n due to make his debut this spring.

1. Sunset Overdrive
A game I had a lot of faith in from the start, I immediately loved everything about this years underdog title, Insomniac Games, creators of the Resistance series and one of my all time favorite series, Ratchet and Clank,  created a punk, high intensity, future apocalyptic title with all kinds of substance. The hilarious one liners, the insane fights, maniacal bosses and arsenal just added to this third-person shooter The game play is addictive, the sound track is awesome and the games ending itself is both sweet and hilarious. Honestly, one of the best games I've played in at least the last 5 years and I went so far as to get the bundle for it. If there's one game you need to catch from 2014, it's definitely this creative and hilarious title.

To go or not to go?: The Interview

The film that was once perfectly fine, then completely banned, and now widely released through various platforms is finally available for us to view but just how good was it? Keep in mind, the film's subject matter may (or may not have) been at the center of the large Sony Leak controversy that's near synonymous with James Franco and Seth Rogen lead comedy, The Interview, with that being said, the film didn't have anything particularly controversial in its self. It drives off of the same comedic troupes that carried other Rogen/Franco titles like Pineapple Express and This Is the End, filled with crude jokes, an on running Katy Perry gag and a handful of hilarious moments, The Interview feels very average for what's normally two very funny actors. I have a big feeling that Sony is going to pull in some money after the controversy but had the film not had that behind it, I wouldn't have been shocked if it flopped in this slow box office year. It's worth a look but it's a film that falls just short of the mark and the risen expectations from Sony first pulling it and then deciding to release it digitally a day before select theaters will screen it Christmas Day, will probably have an effect on how people perceive it. A word of advice, if you choose to view this home from the comfort of your own home, it's worth the 5 dollar rent but not the 15 dollar purchase.

The Interview update, Doctor strange, and that Legend of Korra ending that everyone is talking about

Since I've been traveling the few days and the mayhem of the holiday, I haven't had a lot of time to update the blog but I'm back and hopefully ready for Christmas to kick off. In some quick catch up news, Director of Marvels Doctor Strage, starring Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch, tweeted this cool cosmic image the other day with "Strange but not a stranger - Talking Heads," underneath. The Legend of Korra has finished its series run with a bit of a controversial relationship made canon. When faced with criticism, series creator Bryan Konieztko took to tumblr to offer some advice, stating, “You can celebrate it, embrace it, accept it, get over it, or whatever you feel the need to do, but there is no denying it. That is the official story." Finally, the on-going Sony leak controversy has finally subsided and you can now watch the formerly banned "The Interview," on various platforms such as Xbox Video, Playstation Network, Yahoo video, and even renting it on Youtube. It will be played in select theater locations starting tomorrow. Sadly, this is not currently available in Canada but it's coming! Hope you're all having a happy Holiday, are you asking Santa for any cool nerd related gifts?

You will not be seeing The Interview this Christmas and probably not ever

The last 48 hours have been rough for comedic co-stats James Franco, Seth Rogen, Sony and their up-coming Christmas day release, The Interview, at least what was planned as a Christmas release. The comical title, starred the two actors being sent to North Korea in an attempt to assassinate their current leader and while being met with some early on controversy, everything came to a head this week when the group of hackers who leaked the Sony e-mails, amongst other things, issued a threat if the movie was released comparable to the attacks on 9/11. After just a few meres hours, major theaters chains like Cinemark, Regal, and AMC announced that they would not be showing the film shortly before Sony confirmed that they have "no further release plans for the film." The decision drew a mixed reaction, especially amongst some of Hollywoods biggest stars. Surprisingly, this isn't the only film that's going to suffer due to this decision as an upcoming film starring Steve Carell, titled Pyongyang based on the graphic novel by Guy Delisle, that was slated to being production in March has been scrapped due to its plot centered around the main character being working in North Korea for a year. Public safety comes first but did we validate an anonymous threat that's taking anything related to North Korea off the table or have we made the right decision to protect our movie goers?

Sony hacked e-mails reveal a very uncertain future for The Amazing Spiderman series

Andrew Garfield's days as our friendly neighborhood Spider man may be coming to a close. In the on going Sony hacked leaked e-mails scandal, we've learned a lot about the future of our web-slinging hero that I'm willing to wager the general public wasn't suppose to know. Aside from Sony questioning whether they might move forward with Andrew Garfield or not, they also stated the possibility of a soft "reboot," of the character, introducing a new Spiderman in the upcoming 2016 Sinister Six film, but that's not all. Marvel Entertainment has stepped into the picture as to try to strike a deal with Sony to get the rights to the character back, which makes sense considering Peter Parker plays a major role in Marvels upcoming Captain America: Civil War. The newer Spiderman would ditch the normal tropes such as the backstory and making the love interest more of a side plot and having a more action oriented film, which personally speaking, sounds like a good take on the series. I do, however, feel bad for Garfield who even spoke out on the sequel that didn't quite become the box office success it should have been stating, "through the pre-production, production, and post-production, when you have something that works as a whole, and then you start removing portions of it—because there was even more of it than was in the final cut, and everything was related. Once you start removing things and saying, 'No, that doesn't work,' then the thread is broken, and it's hard to go with the flow of the story. Certain people at the studio had problems with certain parts of it, and ultimately the studio is the final say in those movies because they're the tentpoles, so you have to answer to those people." Anyone who knows me personally knows that I was a pretty big fan of The Amazing Spider Man 2 and hopefully we will end up seeing more of him reprising the role in the future but to be frank, I have no interest in seeing the same Peter Parker/Mary Jane love story play out. I thought one of the smartest moves of the series was using Gwen Stacy, the lesser known earlier love interest of Parker, for the films. Regardless, lets all hope that the next iteration of Spiderman ends up in good hands.

Good news for The Last Gaurdian

The plagued The Last Guardian, that was completely absent from this years Toyko Game Show, may finally be moving towards some firm development. The game, initially announced in 2009 with a planned release in 2011, has undergone plenty of behind the scenes problems, from executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama leaving followed shortly afterwards by the creator of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, Fumito Ueda. In an interview with Dengeki Playstation, Ueda revealed that the long anticipated title is on the way "under completely new conditions," which has a lot of gamers speculating that this title is going to land on the Ps4. Fingers crossed that we end up with another amazing and emotional title from a great developer and creator. Take a look at the original debut trailer for the title at E3 five years ago below.

Christian Bale talks The Dark Knight Rises ending

The ending to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, left a lot of fans confused and even years after, star of the film Christian Bale is still being asked about it and he finally weighted in today. While promoting his latest Blockbuster, Exodus: Gods and Kings, a question about the ending of the final film arose while Bale was at Q & A for Entertainment Weekly. The end sequence that had appeared very "dream-like," to a lot of viewers and in his personal opinion, Bale stated, "I find it very interesting, and I think that with most films, I tend to say it’s what the audience thinks it is. My personal opinion is, no, it was not a dream -- that that was for real, and he was just delighted to find that he had freed himself from the privilege but ultimately the burden of being Bruce Wayne." In my own opinion, I agree completely with Bale. I never considered the ending to be a dream sequence, I had just figured he had escaped and left everything in the bat cave over to "Robin," played by Joseph Gordon Levitt. The nod he gave Alfred (Michael Caine), to me, signaled his intentions to return and that his work wasn't done. You can see the entire interview by clicking the link above, what are you thoughts? Did Bale's explanation change the film for you?

Sakurai talks the end of Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros has had on giant year, from Amiibo figures launching, to two different console versions arriving all over the world on the Wii U and the 3DS, but series creator Masahiro Sakurai has delivered some bad news to games just before the holidays. While not directly ruling out the possibility of their being another game in the series, Sakurai stated, “With both Melee and Brawl, I made those games with the thought that there wouldn’t be any more sequels. Thus, I really can’t deny the chance for another. However, as for myself, I don’t think there will be.” While its hard to imagine that the fastest selling game on the Wii U console won't receive a sequel, Sakurai might not be involved. He does, however, raise some good points that the game can essentially only move forward, not being able to cutback on features or the already 5 0character roster. Regardless, we probably won't see another Super Smash Bros title for awhile especially when you take into account that the previous Wii title, Super Smash Brawl, was released 7 years ago. Only time will tell, can Super Smash Bro's benefit from some new hands taking over the wheels or will Sakurai surprise us once again by returning to the series and creating another title?

Marvel fans have a lot to celebrate today! While it's might not be "new" news, per say, it looks like Marvel had finally confirmed that Sherlock and The Imitation Game star, Benedict Cumberbatch, will indeed be Doctor Strange. If that's not exciting news, Ryan Reynolds (the only man who should be playing Deadpool) will be, in fact, Deadpool! It's going to be great to see a movie focused on Deadpool and not one where he played a hardly interesting side character. (X Men: Origins) Cumberbatch is also another great addition to the ever expanding Marvel cinematic universe as well! Look forward to seeing Doctor Strange in theaters November 4th, 2016 and Deadpool is slated for a February 12th, 2016 release. Also, a fun bit of bonus casting news, Krysten Ritter from the ABC series, The B in Apartment 23 and Mike Colter from Halo 5: Nightfall and American Horror Story are starrting in Marvels Netflix series Jessica Jones, Ritter will star as jones and Colter will play the role of Luke Cage.
