I had just tucked myself into bed when the internet had exploded with news that the trailer for Captain America: Civil War had leaked and boy is it exciting. There's going to some be epic clashes between Captain America and Iron Man and Capt does everything in his power to protect his former ally turned brainwashed criminal, The Winter Soldier. There's a lot of quick cool moments like some returning avengers as well as a quick glimpse of Black Panther as well! Take a look here and get ready for the big film debut May 6th, 2016! There was some good and bad news for DC's Tv series this week. First, a rumor of Matt Ryan's John Constantine who recently reprized his role on the CW's Arrow might play a larger role than we thought. Rumors surfaced this week that Constantine might make his way over to the 2016 series, The Legend of Tomorrow but in the second season. Unfortunately for both Ryan and the new series, it's apparently being reported that the first season of Legends of Tomorrow is so expensive to develop that the chance of a second season is apparently unlikely. Hard to imagine given the success of all the current DC TV which makes me believe that if Legends does as well as the CW hopes it will, it will definitely be back for another season. Looks like the future for Constantine is once again up in the air but hopefully we do see more of him on arrow and possibly even, The Flash. 2015 has not been the best year for the box office, with films big and small falling short of their projected gross, no one expected the last Hunger Games film to do as poorly as it did but should we have seen this coming? The latest Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 2, opened to the lowest opening weekend of all four films with just over 101 million dollars, which is surprising that a number that high could be a disappointment but if you look at the previous installments, maybe we should have assumed with would have hit right around there. The first Hunger Games film grossed 152 million in it's opening weekend while the 2nd and 3rd brought in 158 million and 121 million respectively. A bit surprising considering the Mocking Jay Part's 1 and 2 contain the most drama and intensity of the popular franchise but it looks like waning interest had increased over the years. Even though Mocking Jay didn't make what was projected, other newcomers like Sony's The Night Before made a measly 10 million against it's 25 million budget and the Oscar buzz worthy The Secrets in Their Eyes, made a low 6 million against a 34 million dollar budget. Hopefully the next few weeks will help this movie reach it's predecessors before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, dominates the box office in December.
Fantastic Four was a massive failure this year, so bad in fact that one of the lead cast members admitted to not having seen the critically panned film. It was pretty surprising when Fox announced that despite the movie's awful box office run, they would still be moving ahead the planned sequels, the next in scheduled for 2017 until they apparently removed the following Fantastic Four film from their forthcoming films roster. While there could possibly be a reschedule, things are looking great for the latest iteration of this franchise that failed to take off twice now. Unfortunately for the fans, Fox is probably not going to let the rights go back to the comic book owners and thus, we will probably see another film or another reboot sometime within the next 5 years. Hopefully 3rd times the charm but lets not count on it, for now, it's probably good bye to the gang we hardly knew (or enjoyed).
Let's face it, the Thor solo films might be the worst films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite the awesome cast of regulars Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, Stellan Skarsgard and even Sir Anthony Hopkins, Thor has had some pretty lack luster villains stacked up against him. While the world of Asgard is amazing to see on the big screen, we haven't had as much time there as we would like to be fully immersed in the realm of the Son of Odin. Not to mention that fan favorite villain, Loki, may or may not return for the next Thor film, the final solo film might be in a tough spot but actor Chris Hemsworth believes he knows what the franchise needs. During his press rounds for the upcoming film, In the Heart of the Sea, Hemsworth stated that the franchise, "needs to be injected with that sort of smart wit and unexpected kind of humor, kind of what James Gunn came in and did with Guardians ," and I honestly couldn't agree more. Guardians of the Galaxy was a massive success for Marvel especially when you considering it was the least known property of everything Marvel has done up to date. Even Ant-Man took it's humor to another level creating an action packer and hilarious super hero film. Thor: Ragnarok is still a little ways away with it's 2017 release date but hopefully it'll learn from the mistakes of the previous two films and give us one incredible send off for this epic Marvel hero!
