The latest addition to the Hunger Games film quadrilogy, The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1 has been released but how does it hold up to it's two predecessors? Right off the bat, you can tell this film is going to be considerably darker and even with the few laughable and heart warming moments, they feel few and far between. A war torn Katniss is found in an under ground facility in District 13, alongside other survivors and some familiar faces from Cathing Fire. Following the events of the destruction of District 12, an uprising because to spread through out the other Districts in Panem. As a game of politics beings to play out by President Snow (Jeffery Wright) and the leader of military District 13, President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore), Katniss and those closest to her find themselves in the cross hairs. In the ever expanding genre of Young Adult novel turned movies, The Hunger Games, continues it's streak of excellence with it's 3rd installment. The series heavily benefits from Academy Award winning Jennifer Lawrence and her ability to actually portray Katniss Everdeen in a scarily relatable manner. This becomes apart in scenes where we watch her suffer the agonizing truth that her home and everyone she use to know is no longer. A lot of the focus of this film is on Katniss and less of the side characters that we've grown use to in the first two films. The action is intense along with the stakes and they're a good handful of twist that are borderline heartbreaking. Really, my two biggest complaints are the lack of Woody Harrelson's Haymitch Abernathy and the fact that this is a two part film and we'll have to wait another year to see part 2! All in all, this is a film you'll definitely want to catch.
