The worst films of 2015

Every year comes with a handful of Oscar hopefuls but some fall so short, you wonder how they got the green light in the first place.

#5 Aloha - With dialogue so mind numblingly boring, you'd be surprised that the almost entirely A-list cast couldn't get this movie to float even a little. With big names like Bradly Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and Bill Murray, this military rom-com looked like it was going to be a hit but after it's push back release from December 2014 to May 29th, 2015, the movie already had some trouble brewing. The controversial white washing of Stone's character Allison Ng, did not help either. In the end, Aloha was so terrible and boring that I nearly forgot I had actually watched the film, the only scene I can recall is a painfully awkward 4 and 1/2 minutes dialogue exchange between Cooper and McAdams that is so poorly written its hard to imagine anyone would let it go to the big screen. Thankfully everyone involved in this project has moved on to other work and no one seems to be hindered by this early summer flop.

#4 Get Hard - There is a problem here and it's two very funny comedians trying too hard to be funny. Instead of what could have been the comedy hit of 2015, Get Hard is full of cheap laughs and offensive jokes that seem below each of these comedians levels. The movie centers around the premise of Kevin Harts character preparing Ferrel's for a stint in prison and never really takes off from there. Fortunately, this movie turned a major profit this year which isn't terribly surprising but if you have a knack for good humor, this title is almost impossible to sit through.

#3 Black Hat - Chris Hemsworth is by no means a terrible actor but Black Hat is an awful film. Cliché computer hacking and a readable plot make this once promising looking thriller into a little over two hour snooze fest, lacking any actual thrill. Micheal Mann, director of Heat, Collateral, generally posses a sort of poise with his style when it comes to the thriller genre but a lot of scenes just become a blurred mess especially towards a big gun fight at the end. If this is the first time you've heard of this film then I'm not shocked. Black Hat opened on a slow weekend in January and managed to only gross 19.6 million of it's 70 million dollar budget, making it one of the biggest flops of 2015.

#2 American Ultra - This one is a head scratch-er for me personally. American Ultra opened at the tail end of the summer with a great cast and a wicked funny premise about a stoner who's secretly the sole survivor of a defunct program of super agents. The problem is, this movie is wildly boring in nearly every direction possible. The laughs stop early and the movie begins to move at a snails pace. Even with the likes of Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace and more, this movie never actually reached its potential of hilarity that this great premise presented. This was actually the only movie this year I had to stop watching because I was physically so uncomfortable and disinterested. This dull comedy film couldn't sell it's potentially good character.

#1 - The early reviews were out and they were unforgiving but I still brought along friends and sat through the worst film of 2015 and really, the worst super hero movie of the decade. The Fantastic Four reboot is an abysmal mess with another great cast. The movie's numerous plot holes, poor pacing and backwards post editing effects that were completely noticeable pulled this film apart. Even the footage in the trailers like The Thing fighting tanks or Susan Storm blowing away several crates with a force field were removed from the film. The awesome Doctor Doom was reduced to an irradiated angry intern who's final fight ends in what felt like 3 minutes. The movie has, however, gone up from it's previous score of 9% to a resounding 10% on rotten tomatoes based on 199 reviews and honestly, that's giving this film more than it deserved. You can read my full review here but honestly, if there's one film that should have never seen the big screen in 2015, it was this one. Here's to 2016 and hopefully a whole handful of better films.
