The 80's pop filled, eccentrically cast, newest super hero film from Marvel Entertainment signifies the bigest side step and risk since it began its three phase film plan back in 2008, but is Guardians of the Galaxy worth the galactic ride? Lets take a look. (mild spoilers below) The movie is centered around a kid who's abducted from earth and leads a life of thievery under the name, Starlord. Upon being captured and arrested, he meets the rag tag group who eventually become the dubbed the "Guardians of the Galaxy," which includes the brute Drax, the intelligent trash talking Rocket, Groot the Tree and the adopted daughter of Thanos, Gamoora. As the gang travels the galaxy in pursuit of a crazed intergalactic being known as Ronan the accuser, they pursue yet another part of the infinity gauntlet (which will become a major factor most likely in Avengers 3), one of the infinity stones. While this movie serves as a big tie in for what happened post Thor: The Dark World as well as paves the road for Thanos's inclusion for the 3rd Avengers film, Guardians of the Galaxy stands strong on it's own. With it's diverse and eclectic cast, emotion driven story line full of humor, and a terrific soundtrack, this is a movie that's hard not to like. Certain scenes felt like they didn't get enough time, like a fight between Gamoora and Thanos's other daughter, Nebula. The action and scenery itself was amazing, featuring some awesome space scenes and weaponry. While the previous Marvel movies felt very, "hero-y," Guardians feels very sci-fi epic and with the dialogue, it works to its advantage. There was hardly a moment where you weren't either rooting for a character, or nearly on the brink of tears, which is always refreshing to find in a movie where most summer blockbusters rely on impressing movie goers with strong CGI. All in all, I'm more than happy to say Guardians of the Galaxy will sit on the upper tier of Marvel films, a trend that the studios keeps improving upon year after year and while we won't see the sequel until 2017, I can tell you it will be worth the wait if it's anything like this one. Make sure you check out Guardians of the Galaxy this weekend, it's already off to a good start.
