This year saw the release of quite a few films and another film that you might have missed is the korean sci-fi action epic Snowpiercer, based on the French graphic novel, Le Transperceneige. While this movie received a little difficulty with it's release state-side due to some of its content, you can still find it in some theaters as well as online and this is going to easily be one of 2014's best releases and for a title with receiving the acclaim it has, it's one you should definitely see. Starring the likes of Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell, Go-Ah Sung, Tilda Swinton and a handful of others, Snowpiercer meshes up the post apocalyptic story arc with, well, an actual story. Snowpiercer takes place on a train housing the last remaining life on earth after a failed attempt at combating global warming goes array, freezing over the earth. What becomes the most interesting theme about this film is that its not necessarily about survival. It's about changing the system. The train operates on the simple idea that those who "have" live in the front and those who do not live in the back, the rear end, where the space is congested and they're fed a protein bar (which contents are a shock in itself.) They're a handful of wonderful (as well a gut-wrenching) moments that nail this idea of being the true "lower" class as being forced to line up and be counted as well as having on mans arm removed in what sounds like a horrific and painful process. As the characters traverse their way through the train, you even seen the increase in luxuriousness that the upper cars are allowed, even one featuring a night club inside of it. The thing that sets Snowpiecer apart is the allegorical nature of the film itself. Even the very last image offers a bit of a ironic twist in that it's thought to not be possible. This movie is about a revolution working in a world that benefits the favored and keeps in line those who do not and even still, not everything is as perfect as it seems. The ending is more than shocking and deserves its own mention as another reason this movie keeps itself out of the generic summer action epic with great choreographed fight scenes and great CGI. Even after the initial controversy, limiting it's release in the US, it has landed massive international success, Snowpiercer has (as of July 2nd) opened in over 150 theaters as well as being available On Demand on certain cable providers.
