We're just a few weeks shy of blockbuster season for the film industry and this weekend's big release is the sequel to 2012's Snow White and The Huntsmen but is the movie icy hot or just a cold mess? The Huntsman: Winter's War, is a mix of prequel and sequel, that serves as both background and an extension of the original movie featuring a new villainous queen. The beginning shows how the Huntsman came to be, surrounded by other stolen children in a camp to become an army to serve a grieving queen after the loss of her own child. After about 20 minutes, a plot twist (that feels extremely cheap but actually ended up being smart) nearly undoes any interesting portion of the beginning, making you wonder why they even wasted time showing the "prequel portion," even though it's explained again later in the film. A handful of characters return from the previous film like Nick Frost as a dwarf, serving as the comedic relief and Sam Claflin for an extremely brief cameo. Again, Charlize Theron's Ravenna is the best part of this film, by a long shot. Both in plot and delivery, the scene stealing queen is the only menacing one in this film. Not even the strange, horned gorilla-trolls were as crazy as led to believe. There's a series of strange, head scratching moments like some involving a bridge and some extremely underused side characters, but there's enough plot twist to actually surprise you if you can sit through this film. It scenery is again gorgeous and the costumes out do the first film which picked up a nomination for Best Costume Design at the Academy Awards. All in all, it improves on the first film (despite it's many flaws) and seeing as it has no competition this weekend, it might be worth checking out just to enjoy the aesthetics.
The latest in the long running Bourne action franchise is set to return this summer with it's original star in place. Matt Damon is starring in the 5th installment in the series and it looks more gritty and action packed than ever. Take a look at the official full trailer for Jason Bourne July 29th, 2016. Acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen) has debuted the teaser for his upcoming western, action remake, The Magnificent Seven. The film, which is a remake of a 1960's title, which was a remake of a 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai, puts an all star cast as hired gunmen, aimed to save a small town from marauders. The film stars such A-listers as Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Vincent D'Onforio and Hardcore Henry's Haley Bennet (who can be seen in the trailer). Take a look at the awesome action teased and get ready for The Magnificent Seven when it debuts on it's new release date, September 23rd, 2016! Lionsgate has been pretty "ho-hum" regarding it's reboot to the long running Power Rangers franchise but today, People Magazine gave us an exclusive first look at actress Elizabeth Banks as the evil Rita Repulsa and it's far from what anyone expected. Draped in a green body suit with gold finger tips, its quite the departure from the almost, sorceress, look from the original. It's yet to have been seen if her cohorts from the series, Lord Zedd and Goldar, will appear in the film as well. Lionsgate has also pushed the release of the Power Rangers reboot film for a third time from January 13th, 2017 to March 24th, 2017. Until then, we'll just have to keep an eye and ear out for more casting news.
Predictably, Disney crushed the weekend box office with their live action adaptation of the childrens story, The Jungle Book. The film opened to a massive weekend, bringing in just over $100 million with a whopping $103, 567,000 million by Sunday evening. Without much competition, Barbershop: The Next Cut opened at number 2 with just over 20 million, not bad considering that was the overall budget of the film. Criminal starring Kevin Costner, Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice's Gal Galdot, opened to a low 5th place this weekend, bringing in just barely over $5 million dollars. The Boss, Batman v Superman, and Zootopia round out the top 5 for this weekend.
With just under a year until it's release, we have our first official image from the sci-fi film, Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson. The movie, based on the massively popular anime and manga series, has been criticized for it's casting choice of an American actress over a Japanese actresses for the role. Fans are sounding off on twitter and various other social media sites. While the movie is retaining the name of the original characters and setting, this is far from the first manga adaptation (even recently) to 'whitewash' the main role. Ghost in the Shell is due out in theater March 31st, 2017 and also stars actors Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, and Takeshi Kitano.
Some trailers just don't stick the first time around but if you weren't entirely sold on J.K. Rowlings return to her magical universe with, Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them, then you will be after this new teaser! Take a look at all the magic, wonder and more below! Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them opens November 18th, 2016. One of this years most anticipated and innovative action films hits theaters this week but does it pack a punch or is too generic? Hardcore Henry, formerly titled "Hardcore," made a big splash last year at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) with it's creative film style and nonstop action, it became STX Entertainment's first film picked up from a festival after a bidding war between Lionsgate and Universal. The movie has since been building hype to it's April release. Hardcore Henry is shot entirely through a rigged helmet equipped with 2 go-pro Hero 3's (pictured below) and over 10 different actors and stuntmen including director of the film and Biting Elbows member, Illya Naishuller. The movie get into it fairly quick with a handful of humorous moments and fast paced fight scenes but the only part that really is a loss for this film is the villain. Not only is he not menacing, there's no explanation behind what he can do. As to not give away his role in the film, you'll wonder often why someone that powerful hasn't won already? While some of the scenes were paced fantastically well given what they were trying to accomplish, some of the fight scenes become a dizzying frenzy, making you glad this movies just over an hour an half. District 9's Sharlto Copley plays a character named Jimmy, who becomes Henry's sidekick of sorts through various, often funny, interaction and is probably the only memorable character in the film (For reasons that come very apparent when you watch it). If you're walking into the movie theater looking for a memorable story line with a strong supporting cast, this is obviously not that film for you, however, Hardcore Henry's experience just won't be the same off the big screen. Have a punk rock, action packed good time this weekend with Hardcore Henry!
Early in the year, one sundance film was apparently so controversial that it sent critics out of the theaters. It was a real, "love it or hate," kind of film starring two very young and well known actors, Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe. Swiss Army Man is, perhaps, the most divisive film that circulated around Sundace and now we know why. The movie stars Paul Dano as a lone man stuck on an island when he finds a lifeless corpse that washes ashore. The rest of the film is apparently full of hilarious (to some) moments and lots and lots of farts. The farts are actually what got the most complaints. Based on the trailer, Swiss Army Man, looks like a wild ride about a mans hallucinations and his companionship with a corpse. Take a look at the trailer for yourself and get ready for all of the farting June 17th, 2016. |
