In an effort to appease fans, Nintendo released a statement to Associate Press that effectively squashes the question of having same sex relationships in their life simulator title, Tomadachi Life. As I wrote yesterday, Nintendo came under fire for removing a bug that would allow characters to marry the same sex partners in their version of the game. What Nintendo clarified with their statement this morning is that same sex marriage or partnerships were never part of the Japanese coding of the game and since the US version is essentially a copy of the same game, that feature will be excluded as well. Nintendo went on to state that they were "absolutely not trying to provide social commentary," although Jason Schrier over at Kotaku feels as if the removal of the feature provides a commentary in itself. Articles over at Buzzfeed and The Guardian echo the same sentiment. It's an odd thing to deny fans the right to access that ability in a game essential made to mimic real life with a "whimsical twist." During a week filled with bad news for Nintendo, this scandal certainly doesn't help the company. As I've stated before, we're going to have to wait and see if this is going to have an effect on the sales for Tomadachi Life, a title that has been in the news more for bad things than good.
