How much is too much?

As DC begins to map out there movie franchise trajectory against heavy competition against marvel one has to wonder, is the market going to end up being over saturated with Super Hero films? Will there come a day when opening two films on the same day cause both companies to lose out on both?

DC has announced that they have tentatively scheduled 9 more films following 2018's release of the Justice League, which is a very large number considering the Marvel cinematic universe may be looking at two decades worth of films by the time they finish creating everything they have planned. The problem is, between these two major properties competing to bring better super hero films, that might be a majority of our summer blockbusters, not just for year or two, but for awhile. We're already experiencing a bit of a cram this year with the release of Captain America:Winter Solider on April 4th, usually quite early for a movie that's ideal as a summer block buster and only 4 weeks ahead of The Amazing Spider-man 2 which hit theaters May 2nd and X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is hitting theaters May 23rd, a mere 21 days following that. While this is great for the consumers, it may pose a threat for the companies producing these films. A release of more blockbusters can also decrease the longevity of a films gross potential and in an age where these films are becoming more and more expensive for marketing and producing, that's a gamble that many companies can not take and will not take.

The real make or break moment of 2014 will be the release of Marvels biggest side step super hero film, Guardians of the Galaxy. A rag tag group of aliens that will tie in to previous story lines from both the Thor franchise as well as the Avengers, hardly has any recognizable characters compared to Iron Man, Captain American and the Hulk. Featuring a pretty impressive cast starring Chris Pratt, who plays the team leader Starlord, Zoe Saladana as Gamora, adopted daughter of the villain slated to be the central focus in the 3rd Avengers film, Dave Bautista as the wrecking ball Drax the destroyer, and Rocket Raccoon and Groot played by Bradley cooper and Vin Diesel, the film sounds pretty well rounded and fun with some recognizable names that will surely be to it's advantage. The problem is, if this movie is not a hit, will Marvel be willing to take the risk to create solo movies for characters not introduced in cameos from the other main super hero franchises? Will we get to see a Doctor Strange movie or more obscure characters and that goes the same for DC with the possibility of a future Flash film or Martian Man Hunter. While Guardians doesn't land in theaters until August 1st, 2014, we'll have to keep an eye out to see how the success of this film may impact that opportunities of others.
