It's been a tough year for the box office but I'm not sure anyone's having an impressively and at the same time simultaneously disappointing year. Chris Hemsworth is far from an unknown actor but it looks like he's in trouble again for the 4th time in the same year. Looking back to the beginning of 2015, Hemsworth starred in the computer hacking thriller, Blackhat, which was viewed as a box office failure will pulled in under 20 million dollars against a 70 million dollar budget but the bad news didn't stop there. By summer, Avengers: Age of Ultron hit the big screens and while the box office giant did cross the billion dollar mark, it didn't beat the previous Avengers film that was released in 2012. Following this, the sequel in national lampoon series, Vacation, was released back in July but despite less than friendly reviews, the movie actually turned a strong profit earning 104.4 million against a budget of 31 million dollars. Sadly, the early reviews for the latest Hemsworth lead film, In the Heart of Sea, aren't looking to great either and with a budget of 100million dollars, thing's aren't looking so great for the film that's projected to pull in less than 15 million but it looks like the figure will most likely be closer or a little over 20 million when the weekend's said and done. It also doesn't help that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released the following weekend and a handful of holiday releases following the week after. Hopefully Hemsworth can generate some extra buzz with this SNL hosting duties Saturday movie. Regardless of this film doing well, I'm sure he's made enough money from his numerous appearances to leave 2015 comfortably.

For the last time in 2015, Nintendo Direct will give us another look at new Super Smash Bro's news and most likely what's coming as we look ahead into 2016. Since the games release last fall, we've seen numerous releases to the Wii U and 3DS titles including old levels, new costumes for mii fighters and new fighters like Fire Emblem's Roy, Pokemon's Mewtwo, Street Fighter's Ryu and even the latest announced addition to the roster, Cloud from Final Fantasy 7. The game was met by rave reviews from critics, amassing over 7 million copies for its 3DS version alone and just over 4 million for the Wii U version, this massively popular franchise looks like it will be around for a long time and with Nintendo continuing to release new characters to entice players, I'm sure they'll be many reasons to dive back into this title for years to come. The final Nintendo Direct for Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS will air December 15th, 2pm pt/ 5pm et.
It's been a long wait for some concrete Star Trek news and the current rumor is that the trailer will debut alongside J.J. Abrams latest film that will be released in just ten days. Star Trek will debut in the trailer reel for the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens, most likely along side Marvel's Captain America: Civil War trailer debut. Star Trek Beyond will be directed by Fast and Furious franchise regular, Justin Lin and is set to hit theaters 2016. While Abram's did leave the position to tackle Star Wars, he is the producer and Scotty, played by Sean of the Dead's Simon Pegg wrote the screen play for the third installment in the series alongside Doug Jung. Get excited for this awesome trailer in less than two weeks!
In not terribly shocking news, the latest super hero to join the ever expanding cast is rumored to be the fastest man alive himself, The Flash. Played by Ezra Miller, not Grant Gustin who plays the current Barry Allen on the CW's The Flash series, the hero is rumored to make a cameo, which isn't terribly shocking considering Batmn v. Superman has basically become a lead in for the DC super hero epic, The Justice League due out in 2017. I also know that we'll be seeing the other team members like Aquaman and Cyborg in minor roles as well. I, in all honesty, wouldn't be shocked if this movie ended with all of them meeting and some sort of dialogue between Batman and Superman where they say "he's gone/yeah, but he'll be back and so will we," and it will fade in to the Justice League or some variation of. Hopeflly Snyder know what he's doing and doesn't walk this movie down the path of "too many big heroes on the screen." We'll just have to wait and see what Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters March 25th, 2016.
There was some big Yakuza news from the Playstation experience over the weekend it has gotten a lot of fans of this long time franchise very excited. Aside form the world wide release of Yakuza 5 on December 8th, Yakuza 0 will also make it's debut in America in 2016. Yakuza 0 was released in February of this year in Japan and serve as a prequel to the original Yakuza, set in 1998 and featuring recognizable locations from the franchise. The Playstation experience has brought a lot of new gaming info but one of the biggest surprises was our first look at gameplay footage from the coming Final Fantasy 7 remake schedule for the PS4. The game promises to be more than just an updated version of its 1997 predecessor and the action reflects that. While it looks like the swooping camera angle from the original game might make a come back, the combat system itself appears to be a blend of the later Final Fantasy titles that changed things from the original turn based combat to a combination of elements from that and real time action. Take a look at the new trailer below and get excited for the remake of the iconic RPG. One of the hardest franchises out is building up momentum for it's release and we finally have some new game play footage to get games excited. Dark Soul 3 looks like it promises to be as brutal and unforgiving as it's predecessors and the boss fights will be just as over the top! They'll also be two editions of the title released a launch, a Day One edition that contains a starter guide, soundtrack and exclusive o-sleeve packaging as well as the Deluxe edition that comes with both the guide and soundtrack as well as an art book, cloth game map, 10" Red Knight statue and a collectors box for $59 and $129.99 respectively. Take a look at the game play footage from the Playstation Experience Expo coming later this week. |
