Update: I could not find an official launch trailer so here is one from the Nintendo Direct announcing the release of Doom as well as Wolfenstein 2 for the Switch.
Nintendo Switch is still growing its catalog but Nintendo's commitment to bring 3rd party and M rated games to the console is quickly coming to fruition, including one massively popular shooter that is getting some pretty solid reviews. Doom, which was released on multiple consoles back in 2016, finds gamers controlling a lone soldier soldier battling some of the deadliest creatures from Hell. The bloody and gore filled game has had an immense popularity among fans of the shooting genre since its original PC release back in 1993. The series has sold over 10 million copies and latest release is the 8th game in the franchise series overall. Make sure you pick up this title if you're looking for some hardcore action on the go and get ready to wreck some demons. Update: I could not find an official launch trailer so here is one from the Nintendo Direct announcing the release of Doom as well as Wolfenstein 2 for the Switch.

Disney and Lucasfilms is already looking ahead to map out the future of the Star Wars franchise and they announced some very exciting news today. Rian Johnson, director of Looper, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and this December's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has been chose to helm a new trilogy for the galaxy far, far away. The focus will be to "introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored" and will most likely arrive after episode 9. This also makes sense seeing as J.J. Abrams is returning to the franchise to direct the final film of the trilogy. While it will hard to say goodbye to Luke and company, Star Wars has a vast array of canonical stories and characters they can use for their future films. Honestly, this news is nothing short of exciting and absolutely the best direction for Star Wars to head.
Universal's budding "Dark Universe" may never come to fruition and that shouldn't surprise anyone. Tom Cruise's Mummy film starring Sofia Boutela as the iconic villain was panned by critics upon release. While the movie ultimately surpassed budget, it was largely underwhelming in the long run and has put the future of their expanding universe in jeopardy. The film series would create feature films for famous monsters like Dracula, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Frankenstein and a handful of others. It is also telling that both Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan left the Dark Universe to focus on Star Trek Discovery and the Fast and Furious spin-off starring the Rock respectively. The proposed rumor of hiring Jason Blum who has become a major name for the horror genre for his low budget and highly successful titles like the Insidious franchise, Purge, and Janurary's hit Get Out. While they could try and salvage the project and move forward, Universal would be better off listening to the fans and scrapping the universe all together. There is no reason to do a bunch of block buster style monster movie films in an attempt to create a marvel-esque horror franchise. Instead, focus on true horror, take these iconic villains and breathe new life into them with less of the glitz and glam. Time will tell where Universal will end up but if no one steps in to lead the projects soon it looks like it will be the end for the Dark Universe.
Justice League's budget has been reportedly revealed and it is a lot more than Warner Bro's was initially planning but that may not be the worst thing. After changing directors (from Snyder withdrawing due to a death in the family), extensive reshoots, and digitally removing Henry Cavill's mustache which he was contractually obligated to shoot with due to his contract for Mission Impossible 6, the budget has now swelled up to a whopping 300 million. This is also without factoring any additional fees for marketing but I have a feeling that Justice League won't come close to what was spent on Batman v Superman hefty campaign. It is also important to note that the current tracking for the Justice League release is set to debut lower than Batman v Superman, it's poorly reviewed predecessor, and Suicide Squad on top of having been shrunk to having an under 2 hour run time. The argument here is that the shorter run time will contribute to repeat showings and coupled with the lighter tone, hopefully audiences will be inclined to see it more than once. While the budget certainly puts the pressure on the latest Dc film, the success of both IT and Wonder Woman have positioned Warner Bros to have a fairly good fiscal year. The film is set to debut November 17th so look out for reviews as they come between now and early next week.
Some major news dropped this morning when it was reported by multiple sources that Disney has been in talks with Fox media to acquire a majority of their assets. Disney would not only seek to acquire Fox TV Studios, but also properties like 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, and more. The only properties of Fox that they would not acquire would be Fox Sports and Fox News Networks. This would also mean that franchises like the X Men series, as well as current TV and future shows like Gifted, and even Family Guy, would be under the Disney mantel. While this deal is certainly just "talks," as of right now, it is hard to imagine that Disney would not pitch Fox a deal that they couldn't refuse. Disney is also already a massively popular entity and the Xmen film series is really the only mega successful superhero franchise, with DC having not exceeded their budget on two films and only being 4 films into their planned expanding universe, Marvel has reigned supreme. Fox was also not helped by the failed Spiderman spin off universe or the massive flop that was Fantastic Four. Whether this deal will happen of not is to be seen but until then, let keep and eye out and see where this all goes.
Thor:Ragnarok took a lot of creative risks and it seemed to pay off big time. Thor opened the weekend with the 4th biggest opening weekend this year with a whopping 121 million for Marvel studios. If that isn't impressive, it the 17th consecutive number 1 for the MCU, which isn't much of a surprise but Superhero movies have certainly not lost their appeal. Thor: Ragnarok was easily one of Marvel most fun films currently with a 93% rating on rotten tomatoes and an A on cinemascore, it's definitely the movie to check out in theaters right now. It will most likely hold strong next weekend too, up until the release of DC's second film of 2017, the highly anticipated Justice League, which is sure to cut into Thor box office but, seeing as the movie has been fairly successful overseas, the God of Thunder shouldn't have much to worry about. Make sure you see Marvel's latest and look out for Marvel's next film, Black Panther, next February.
This weekend, the limited theatrical run for the new Pokemon anime film, Pokemon the movie: I choose you! is releasing world wide. Earlier this year, the film was met with some harsh criticism for swapping out fan favorites Misty and Brock for two brand new characters, changing the original canon of the story. While it was criticized by fans in Japan as well, it seems to have done fairly well at the Japanese box office so it will be interesting to see if older fans are going to flock to see the film or turn away from it. Either way, we will finally have the opportunity to meet Makoto and Souji for ourselves beginning this weekend!
Blizzcon has arrive and Blizzard gave us a whole boat load of surprising announcements. Overwatch is bringing a brand new support hero by the name of Moira along with a new map and a trailer detailing Reindhardt's background. Starcraft 2 is going to go free to play beginning November 14th. World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth was also announced, featuring new continents, raids, and raising the level cap to 120. Warcraft's Alexstraza and Overwatch's Hanzo are both the latest to be added to the Heroes of the Storm roster. Hearthstone will also be receiving a new expansion for the mobile card game as well. Keep an eye out for more exciting developments from Blizzcon over the weekend and peep below for some trailers from the show. (Spoliers) It is no secret that we are in the middle of an over saturated period of superhero films. Marvel is already 17 titles into their massive and expanding universe with a 3 film commitment per year, not to mention any off shoot comics and DC working on catching up, the ever looming fear is that these movies will become so similar that audiences will turn on them but Waititi's made it clear that his Thor film would be very different from the previous ones and a majority of what makes comic books films. Filled with silly references like an amazing Willy Wonka tunnel scene, to a great call back making fun of Black Widow for this line it is by far one of the funniest comic book movies to ever hit the big screen. There's some hilarious cameo's from Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster to a completely unexpected Matt Damon and even Luke Hemsworth. He also managed to wrap up a great infinity gauntlet plot hole (and you will laugh when you see it). Hela is a fantastic villain, powerful, menacing and downright awesome to watch fight. As the most well reviewed Marvel film, Thor Ragnarok is looking to have one great opening weekend, which is good because (aside from Iron Man 2) the first and second Thor solo films are arguably lower on the list of good Marvel films. The actions awesome, the music is amazing, the easter eggs are plenty, and you won't stop laughing even up until the end. The movie, however, does change some significant things for Thor's lore and it will be very interesting to see what's to come when we see Thor again in Avengers: Infinity War. Waititi's comedy angled action brought some real life back into this franchise and allowed Hemsworth to shine at his best. The entire cast (Thompson, Ruffalo, Blanchett, and more) all benefited from this highly comedic and lose style of film and we can only hope he will get to work with Marvel again as he has expressed interest in doing a Thor: Ragnarok 2 and not a Thor 4. If there is anything you do this weekend, make it to the theaters to see this!
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are looking to bring back some iconic villains in an awesome new way. The battle agency will bring back returning foes and villains from previous Pokemon titles, allowing gamers to encounter them in the alola region. They'll also be a feature where you will be able to rent a Pokemon to fight during these battles for rare prizes. You will also be able to acquire totem sized versions of certain Pokemon by collection totem tickets, which will alow them to appear in battle as a larger version of themsevles, similar to the trailer versions you'll encounter. All that and more when the game releases on November 17th, 2017 but take a look at the brand new trailer below and get excited for even more Pokemon action! |
